The remains of late highlife music legend, Dr. Victor Abimbola Olaiya, has been laid to rest at the Vaults & Garden Cemetery in Ikoyi, Lagos.
Dr. Olaiya, popularly known as ‘Highlife Evil Genius,’ hailed from Ekiti State, he died at the age of 89 on February 12, 2020 at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).
Late Olaiya’s burial was streamed live on Facebook and had guests wearing face masks as well as observing social distancing in line with Lagos State Government rules on curbing the spread of COVID-19.
We had earlier reported that the sad news of the musician’s death was publicised by the managing director of Evergreen Music Company, Bimbo Esho via her Facebook page. Esho wrote:
“The Death of the Doyen of Highlife music in Nigeria. The entire music world wish to announce the death of a legend of Highlife music one of the last man standing, the last of the original Dr Victor Abimbola Olaiya OON.
This untimely incident happened at Luth hospital Lagos state at exactly 12noon today Wednesday 12th of February, 2020. We pray that the Doyen of highlife music finds repose with the creator while wishing the family and entire music community the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss.
And to my namesake Abimbola Olaiya I will miss your contribution to HIGHLIFE MUSIC. Dr Victor Abimbola Olaiya was 89 years of age on December 31st, 2019.”
